Translation by Julia Tran
A number of American webzines have recently published poetry by Vietnamese and Vietnamese American authors.
The latest edition of XConnect (February 2005) featured poetry by three authors: Barbara Tran, Phan Nhien Hao, and Mien Dang.
XConnect is a literary e-journal published by the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn).
Barbara Tran, an English-language poet, first attended New York University then Columbia University. Her debut collection of poetry, In the Mynah Bird's Own Words, was a finalist selection of the PEN/Open Book Award in 2002.
The poetry of Phan Nhien Hao and Mien Dang is being introduced by XConnect in English through translations by the poet Linh Dinh.
Phan Nhien Hao immigrated to the United States in 1991. He earned a B.A. in English Literature in 1998, and an M.S. in Library and Information Sciences in 2000, at the University of California (UCLA).
Female poet Mien Dang was born in 1974 in Da Nang and immigrated to the United States in 1989. She is currently residing in Florida.
Linh Dinh is the author of two collections of short stories and one book of poems published in 2003. He writes his poetry in English.
In the most recent editions of two other American webzines, Linh Dinh also translated and introduced poetry by Thanh Thao, a poet currently residing in Ha Noi.
The journal Drunken Boat introduced four poems by Thanh Thao: "Adornments," "Hoisting Crane," "Possible," and "Serenade."
In Octopus Magazine, readers may find two other poems by Thanh Thao, also translated by Linh Dinh.
